Last week, my four-year-old daughter, Sally, was invited to a children"s party. I decided to take her by train. Sally was very excited because she had never travelled on a train before. She sat near the window and asked questions about everything she saw. Suddenly, a middle-age lady got on the train and sat opposite Sally. "Hello, little girl," she said. Sally did not answer, but looked at her curiously. The lady was dressed in a blue coat and a large, funny hat. After the train had left the station, the lady opened her handbag and took to her power compact. She then began to make up her face. "Why are you doing that?" Sally asked. "To make myself beautiful," the lady answered. She put away her compact and smiled kindly. "But you are still ugly," Sally said. Sally was amused, but I was very embarrassed!

 Grammar focus 语法

1. Last week, my four-year-old daughter, Sally, was invited to a children"s party. 上周，我4岁的女儿萨莉和我被邀请去参加一个儿童聚会。

A: four-year-old这三个单词用连字符连在一起，组成了一个复合形容词，用来修饰后面的名词daughter，表示4岁大的。注意在这个复合词中year不用复数。

Sally作my four-year-old daughter的同位语，起补充说明的作用，去掉并不影响句意的表达。

B: Sally was invited to a children"s party. 是一个一般过去时的被动语态的例子。一般过去时的被动语态的结构为：主语+was/were done+其他。如：

He invited me to join his birthday party last Sunday. 

上周日他邀请我参加他的生日聚会。

I was invited to join his birthday party last Sunday.

上周日我被邀请参加他的生日聚会。

下文中也有一个一般过去时的被动语态的句子：

The lady was dressed in a blue coat and a large, funny hat. 

那位妇女穿着一件蓝色的大衣，，带着一顶大而滑稽的帽子。 

was dressed in表示穿戴着。如： 

My grandmother was dressed in red on her birthday party. 

我奶奶在她的生日会上穿着红色的衣服。

2. She was very excited because she had never travelled on a train before. 萨莉非常激动，因为她从未乘过火车。

这是一个由because引导的原因状语从句。she was very excited.是主句，because she had never travelled on a train before.是从句；原因状语从句，顾名思义，就是用来解释某件事发生的原因。因为sally从未坐过火车，所以非常激动。从句的时态先于主句时态发生，所以是过去的过去，故用过去完成时。

3. After the train had left the station, the lady opened her handbag and took out her powder compact. 火车开出车站后，那位妇女打开了手提包，拿出了粉盒。

A: 这是一个由after引导的时间状语从句。时间状语从句说明主句动作发生的时间，本句中因为火车的离开是在那位妇女打开手提包，拿出粉盒之前发生的，是过去的过去，所以从句的时态是过去完成时。

B: take out表示拿出。如：

Peter took out his wallet and showed his ID card to the police. 

彼得掏出钱包，向警察出示了他的身份证。

C: powder compact表示粉盒；powder粉，粉末；而gun powder表示火药。

4. She then began to make up her face. 然后她开始打扮起来。

make up表示化妆，打扮。如：

She spent an hour making up before the party. 

她在聚会前花了一个小时化妆。

begin to do sth.表示开始做以前没做过的事；而begin doing sth.表示开始做某事，强调动作正在进行。如：

He began to learn English at the age of thirteen. 

他十三岁时开始学习英语的。

He is beginning to realize the importance of learning English.

他开始意识到学习英语的重要性了。

5. Sally was amused, but I was very embarrassed. 萨莉感到很有趣，而我却很尴尬。

A : amuse作动词表示娱乐，逗乐。如：

The audience was amused by the performance. 

观众被这个表演逗乐了。

B: embarrassed作形容词表示尴尬的，窘迫的。如：

She"s embarrassed about her height. 

她因自己的身高而感到困窘。
