As part of its overall strategy to enhance learning in informal environments,the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program funds innovative research,approaches and resources for use in a variety of settings. This specificproject will advance new knowledge about the nature of and functions for rurallibraries as informal STEM learning environments. Research will identify thesocial contexts and relational capabilities of libraries to acquire newscientific knowledge that exists externally and to integrate it into communityknowledge-building and forums. The research outcomes should lead to actionablestrategies for library and science communication practitioners about who andhow to influence public engagement in citizen science drought monitoring.Furthermore, collaborations with these rural libraries will lead to newresources for rural communities and informal STEM education.
This project will focus on the design, development, and evaluation of informalscience education programs and educational media for use in rural libraries indrought prone areas of the Great Plains. The target audiences include publiclibrarians in rural communities of Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Colorado, as well asthe general public (adults and children) they serve. The project goals are toleverage the professional skills and community knowledge of rural librarians tosupport local drought monitoring networks. The model prepares librarians tointroduce citizen science processes and practices within the context ofcommunity dialogue and deliberation about drought. In collaboration withpartners at the Community Collaborative for Rain, Hail, and Snow (CoCoRaHS),and the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC), the project will increasepublic participation in citizen science and improve the communication of science-basedknowledge about drought. The project deliverables include: (1) a professionaldevelopment workshop series for rural librarians, (2) a drought infographicbooklet and poster series, and (3) co-designed library programs for ruralpublic audiences.

The volume and heterogeneity of scientific data goes beyond a researcher?sability to find relevant data, make different formats interoperable, and dealwith difficult ontological and language issues. Progress requires bringingtogether experts in data curation with experts in Artificial Intelligence (AI)to begin a dialog and collaboration on AI tools to span the gap between dataand its reuse. The PIs will organize the conference "Challenges andOpportunities in Scientific Data Discovery and Reuse in the Data Revolution:Harnessing the Power of AI"; the objective is to bring together diversestakeholders including research librarians and data managers, the AI community,and users and consumers of scientific data to dialog around critical places inthe data lifecycle where AI could be groundbreaking.
