ABSTRACT
The Dryad Digital Repository is a curated repository for data that are integralto the findings of scientific and medical publications. The repository receivesdata directly from original researchers, typically at the time of publication, preserves it for the long term, and makes it freely available for reuse.Through partnerships with journals, scientific societies and publishers, Dryadmakes possible the successful implementation of a diverse set of data archivingpolicies. It is managed by the Dryad not-for-profit organization, which has a scalableand distributed source of revenue through one-time data publication charges, purchased both by organizations and individual researchers, and a secondarysource of revenue, as well as a mechanism for stakeholder governance, throughorganizational memberships. This award will enable Dryad to achieve the scalerequired for sustainability through continued growth and extension to newresearch communities. At the same time, it will enable the continued growth ofthe repository"s valuable collection of diverse and high-quality data forresearch and education.
The Dryad Digital Repository is a highly customized instance of the DSpace opensource repository platform. A key distinguishing feature of Dryad is the easewith which researchers can deposit their data alongside their manuscriptthrough integration with the manuscript submission process. Another key featureis curation: data is inspected prior to release by professional data curatorsand, optionally, by expert peer reviewers. Success of this award can bemeasured by the use of the repository by the research community. Indicatorsinclude the number of new datasets released; the number of datasets downloaded;the number of instances of data reuse that can be tracked; the number ofintegrated journals; the number of new members; the number of new sponsors; andthe revenues received through data publication charges. The Dryad DigitalRepository is available at http://datadryad.org.

ABSTRACT
This Learning and Research Center will advance efforts of the InnovativeTechnology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program to betterunderstand and promote practices that increase students" motivations andcapacities to pursue careers in fields of science, technology, engineering, ormathematics (STEM) by developing an innovative approach to using libraryMakerspaces to link literacy, career awareness, and learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Middle and high schoolsstudents from groups underrepresented in science, including visually impairedstudents, will digitally design and fabricate 3D-printed tactile storybooks foryoung children with visual impairments. In partnership with schools, libraries, and the Colorado Center for the Blind, the project will engage participants insocially purposeful activity as they gain experiences in integrating art, multimodal literacy, engineering design and fabrication, STEM concepts, andmentoring activities that raise awareness of careers in STEM-related fields.High school students who complete the program will have opportunities to serveas mentors for younger students. The Tactile Picture Books Project (TPBP) hastwo overarching goals: a) Expand participation in STEM among underrepresentedlearners, especially girls, underrepresented minorities and students withvisual impairments, through accessible critical making experiences inlibraries; and b) Increase STEM career awareness and interest amongunderrepresented learners.
The project will engage more than 770 learners from underrepresented groups, including at least 400 females and 120 students with visual impairments toexamine the new strategy and to deepens understanding of the factors thatsupport the success of the approach among groups underrepresented in STEM fields.A Design-Based Implementation Research (DBIR) approach will be employed tostudy outcomes relating to three research questions: a) What aspects of theTPBP curriculum and informal learning environment most effectively supportstudents" STEM competencies and dispositions, including: multimodal literacyand 3D design for diverse learners, fabrication skills, collaboration andinnovation, and self-efficacy and persistence? b) In what ways and to whatdegree do STEM Professionals, serving as Makerspace mentors, influencestudents? awareness of and interest in STEM careers? And c) What aspects of theCritical Making experience focused on tactile books most effectively engage andsupport underrepresented learners, including girls, minorities and students withvisual impairments, in 3D design and fabrication activities, and in developingSTEM attitudes and interests? The project incorporates two tiers of mentors tosupport critical making experiences in libraries: a) High School Mentors, recruited from partner schools, and b) STEM Professionals, recruited frompartner Maker groups. Accessible tactile pictures created through the projectwill be distributed to families with blind children via Colorado"s TalkingBooks Library, integrated into public libraries" Sensory Storytimes (designedfor children with sensory processing issues and autism), and the 3D designswill be made available online to support widespread production of accessiblematerials for young children. The TPBP curriculum, design guidelines and researchfindings will be disseminated via national networks of educators, libraries,Makerspaces, and researchers in education and career development.
